Alice Dixon is a choreographer, dancer, teacher and performer based in Naarm/Melbourne who works across contemporary dance, theatre and experimental performance. She has worked as a dancer and performer with Australian and international artists and companies including: Natalie Cursio, Lucy Guerin, Monica Bill Barnes & Company (NYC), Chunky Move, Opera Australia, Aphids, Victoria Chiu, Reckless Sleepers (UK), Phillip Adams BalletLab, Walter Dundervill (NYC), Euginia Lim, Rob McCreddie, Emma Riches, Nebahat Erpolat, Deanne Butterworth, Gabrielle De Vetri and One Step at a Time Like This, amongst others. Recent performance highlights include performing in Lucy Guerin’s retrospective, NEWRETRO at ACCA (2023) and NEWRETRO REDUX (2024) as well touring to Venice and Paris to perform in PENDULUM, created by Matthias Schack-Arnot and Lucy Guerin. Most recently Alice performed alongside Mish Grigor in Class Act at The Sydney Opera House.
Since 2013 Alice has worked in collaboration with fellow dance and performance makers William McBride and Caroline Meaden. Together they have made and performed eight original works of dance and theatre, carving out a distinctive aesthetic and formal contribution to the local dance ecology. Blending forms and references to create highly local and specific “Gesamtkunstwerks", they wilfully embrace and subvert “genre”, and slyly “perform performance”, allowing intuitive and subconscious logics to impose their desires on the process. Alice Will Caroline have presented work in festivals and venues including Dance Massive, Next Wave, FOLA (Festival of Live Art), Dancehouse, Carriageworks, the Substation, Temperance Hall, Arts House, Abbotsford Convent, Northcote Town Hall and the National Gallery of Victoria. Their most recent work ‘What’s Actually Happening’ was presented as part of the Keir Choreographic Award 2022. Their work together has been recognised by numerous awards and nominations including the 2020 Green Room Award for Best Ensemble (Dance). As mid-career dance artists they are active advocates and mentors for younger artists. They were key figures in the development of TTDA (Think Tank Dance Assembly) in 2020.
In 2022 Alice, Will and Caroline were honoured to receive a Chloe Munro fellowship. Alice, Will and Caroline are the 2024 Directors in Residence at Lucy Guerin Inc. In 2024 they also received a bespoke 6 week residency at The Australian Ballet Centre.
Alice’s individual work has been supported by residencies including: Lucy Guerin Inc. Studio Residency; PAF Summer University (France); Maximised by Chunky Move; Arts House Four Walls; Tasdance TRIP Residency; Dancehouse; Orbost Centre for Dance Research (Rosalind Crisp and Andrew Morrish); Mosaico Danza (Italy); and Strange Attractor: Make, Think, Speak with David Pledger (Gorman House, ACT).
